Journal entry by Susan McCormick

It is with heavy hearts that we share with you that our beloved mom passed away last night at 11:15pm after her courageous battle having survived a massive stroke.  She was a fighter until the end and was sent on her journey after hearing from every member of her immediate family - all of us sharing with her our MANY favorite memories.  She was a fierce woman who loved with all of her heart, and she was always deeply committed to her family.  To her, family came first and her wishes were to have a ceremony with only her family, so we will be honoring that this Saturday with a funeral mass at 10am at Saint Stephen the Martyr Church in Middleburg, VA.  She will then be buried in Middleburg, next to her son-in-law, Paul McCarty, immediately following.  On Sunday, the family will host a brunch at Susan McCormick's home so friends of the family can pay their respects.

To know our family is to recognize we can find humor in even the most somber of moments.  The nurses hesitated to share this with us, but at this point, they felt like family to us, so they erred on the side of "you can't make this stuff up".  As we visited mom each day, we all stayed connected via video and played her favorite songs - especially all the Christmas classics as it was her most favorite time of the year.   We sang and laughed and cried and shared many many crazy stories.  As the nurses were removing all the life supporting tubes from her, the Alexa chose the song by the Bee Gees, "Stayin' Alive", and all the nurses in unison started laughing out loud because they had all come to have known us and appreciated the irony.  I like to think that the many who went before our mom were greeting her and sharing their sense of humor helping her make this important transition.  God is good.

When it became apparent that mom was nearing the end, we held her and kissed her and let her know it was time to go to heaven to bask in the purity of love that only heaven can offer.  She was most deserving of this gift, and it is now offering us solace as we prepare for her final send off.  When we all asked her to go be with God...that it was time, she actual listened and made it a peaceful process.  We even joked that it was the only time she ever listened to us - and if you knew her - you certainly understand the significance. :-)

Thank you all for the outpouring of love and support offered to our family during this time.  We thank God for all our blessings, most importantly that we were graced with wonderful friends and family.  Rest in Peace, mom, we will never forget the many gifts you shared with all of us and will carry on your legacy the best we can.  You can now rest in peace...
