James’s Story

Site created on October 11, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.  Jimmy was admitted to the Avera McKennan hospital in Sioux Falls on Sunday Oct 7th.  He has been experiencing severe pain for several months now. and has had no energy.  When he arrived on Sunday his heart was in  atrial fib.  He was treated with IV medications and went back into regular rhythm however they wanted to monitor him so he was admitted.  Since then they have done extensive testing and finally today were given answers.  While not the answer we would have liked to have heard... we are blessed to have received an answer all the same!  Jim was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma which is a rare blood plasma cancer.  They started a form of chemo today and will add another medication when he is stronger and can handle more.  He was given a high dose of steroids which will hopefully help him find some relief soon.   This cancer is treatable but not curable.  We will continue to update this site with progress.  Please keep him in your prayers.

Journal entry by KERRI CHRISTENSEN

Hello, thank you for all the prayers. Dad was released on Saturday afternoon. Sioux Falls,  Avera did a great job getting the right antibiotics and steroids started. He just saw his family doctor in Mitchell for a recheck. His left lung still has some diminished sounds, so I asked if he would benefit for a few more days of antibiotics since they only sent him home with a couple of days. He agreed to give him 5 more days, hopefully that will be enough to get him back to normal. Overall,  he is much improved. Yay!! Doctor said next time he will be more aggressive in treating him next time he comes in ill. He has not really had to treat dad for pneumonia before, I hate to say I told you so...doctor. (Kerri knows best) 😜 Follow your gut when you see your physicians, if you feel there is something wrong then push until you get the treatment or answers. I should of pushed more to have an x-ray done last week. He was not planning on doing blood work or x-ray.  ugh
Dad will see his cancer doctor on May 13th.

Mom update- Her results of her upper endoscopy scope came back pretty good. She has some redness and inflammation in her stomach, she will be on a stronger acid reflex medication for 8 weeks. Her biopsy results came back normal. Praise the Lord!! She will see the doctor for a follow up on May 30th.

She will be having her silicone shim placed next Thursday April 25th in Sioux Falls. We are hopeful this will help her be able to talk louder and not have to use such force to speak. It has been a struggle the last 8 months for her. Please keep that procedure in your prayers please.

Thanks again for all the love, prayers and support with these two.

Love,
Jim & Family
