Isabella’s Story

Site created on October 12, 2018

In March of this year around Spring break, Bella  began to have headaches that she just couldn’t shake.  She was also seeing double.  I took her to the eye doctor where we learned she had a stigmatism in both eyes.  She was fitted for glasses & the glasses helped with the headaches and vision.  She received a MRI just for precaution which she was awake for & I was able to be in the room with her as that procedure only took about 30-45 minutes.  The MRI came back clear.

In July, Bella started noticing that her vision would go completely out when she would stand up & take up to 10 seconds to come back.   Her Dad & stepmother made an appointment for an eye specialist.   The vision issues started to subside.   Her shoulder began to hurt, and within the last couple of weeks in September she began to have issues with using mobility & numbness in her right arm.  Her blood work was taken which came back normal & an MRI was scheduled for October 5th for extra examination before her scheduled October 11th eye specialist appointment.    It was a strong possibility that Bella was suffering from symptoms of Chiari Malfunction.

I checked her into Vanderbilt’s Children hospital for the MRI.  She was going under anesthesia this time.  I waited for a little over 2 hours when I was called back to see Bella in recovery.    I was told that there was a mass in Isabella’s spine & spotting on her brain.

Everything was pretty much a blur from then.  She was immediately admitted into the hospital.  A biopsy was scheduled for Monday October 8th.  She was in ICU for 24 hours afterwards.  She is recovering well from the surgery, and was discharged on Wednesday October 10th.

We are still awaiting results from the biopsy.   I have been processing and planning for the journey to come.  We don’t know if she will need surgery to remove the tumor, but either way she will be receiving chemotherapy.

She is in amazing spirits and has the most courage than anyone I have ever known.  Her energy is humbling.  She is strong and I admire her.  I stayed with her 4 out of the 5 nights she was at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.  It was a rollercoaster of emotions.  The hospital provided the best experience possible, and I am extremely grateful that they took care of my little girl during her stay.   I was able to give her lots of love & I am thankful for my loved ones that was able to love me harder, so that I can give her all the love that she deserves.   I am terrified & extremly hopeful at the same time.

Thank you for understanding that it is of the upmost important that we are taking care of ourselves.  Please, keep the prayers coming because we need them & we are very grateful!🙏🏼

Journal entry by Janet Calvo

Bella has completed her third week of radiation and started chemo. She’s also getting a bit of physical therapy. While there are still many challenges we’re excited to report she’s gained 7 pounds!!! Her strength is building and her appetite has come back with a vengeance. Patrick (Pop) and Uncle Dom made a roadtrip to Knoxville to hang out and go to her treatments with Rachel. They really enjoyed watching her sit up and play LEGOs. It’s been awhile since she’s been able to enjoy simple play. Rachel got a bang out seeing her dad and brother in contortionist poses searching for a tiny stray LEGO that got away. Rachel treated her to Shoney’s this morning before heading back to Nashville and Bella reported the meal as “awesome”! We continue to be grateful for the hospitality of The Moreheads who’ve provided a fantastic home base. We’re thankful for people chipping in to help Rachel bridge her bills on https://www.gofundme.com/4sweetbella?fbclid=IwAR1mz9Z_KRtteZA-ABlca_gzMvcigzXVip3o_bTMHml3xq6igc5fEFsONz4
that Rachel’s Mom set up. Tomorrow there is a benefit event that can be attended virtually. https://www.facebook.com/events/2133383403579314/
The outpouring of support has been a huge comfort to Rachel and all of us. We realize there’s still a long road ahead and that Bella will have good spells and rough. We’ll take this good one ALL DAY LONG!
