I was so saddened and shocked to learn of your loss. The respect and admiration i have for Denie can’t even be described I just know when I needed a friend she was there. I learned so much from her about compassion, motherhood, friendship and criminal defense.

Austin, when I got your call about Denie I was taken aback. You and Denie have taught me so much about criminal defense and quickly became heroes to me in 2003 when I met and started working with you. When I got the news yesterday that Denie had won her battle with this terrible disease I was so sad and angry. My head tells me that she is enjoying feeling the loving arms of our Heavenly Father but, as I sit here with tears still leaking out of my eyes, I'm heartbroken. There will never be another Denie Garrett and we can only strive to be the people she would want us to be. I cry because I'll miss her terribly. I laugh because memories flood my mind. I can see you both dancing at the office Christmas parties; I can see her taking command of a courtroom by just entering the door; I can see that smirk of hers when certain prosecutors forgot who they were dealing with and tried to intimidate her; I can see her face when she told me that Irene passed the bar and when she told me Aaron and Megan were pregnant and then again when she said "It's twins!". My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your entire family.
I have received your Dad's text and I am truly sorry. Your Mother and Father had a dedication to the accused that I never matched. Your Mother was a beacon of light to so many of our joint clients. I have read that you have taken up that cause. I know what is like to bury parents , and fortunately yours do not know what it is like to bury children like my surviving sister. You are their and one of the world's beacon of hope. Stay true to your goals and reach out to me anytime you need to. Your Mother passed way too early, but don't let it stop you. She would not want that. Stay strong for your Father and brother. I know you have that in you from what I have been told by Deanie. You are her voice now and tomorrow. Give it all that you got.
