Heather’s Story

Site created on January 28, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support, prayers, words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

How it started...December 4, 2017 I was at the Dragon football playoff game, feeling normal and celebrating a victory.  The next day I looked in the mirror and noticed that my stomach was pooched out.  Not like "I ate too many pieces of pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving" pooched out but it looked odd.  Over the next 12 days I visited with multiple doctors, took tests and prepared for surgery.  My stomach had grown so that I looked like I was 7-8 months pregnant.  The original thought was I had ovarian cancer and the surgery was to remove the tumors along with a full hysterectomy.

Surgery was on December 15 and after 9  days recovering I was released to go home on Christmas eve.  The pathology report showed the originating cancer was from my appendix.  Only about 1000 people a year are diagnosed with appendiceal cancer.  Very rare.  One in a million.

Here we go...

Newest Update

Journal entry by Heather Pollard Bowers

That was Heather and me in December of 2017 starting a crash course learning about a type of cancer few people knew of, much less had. We became part of a small community of patients, families, and doctors who were all searching for answers. Understanding of Appendiceal cancer has come a long way in the last three plus years. We've gone from confusion over its naming conventions, to consensus on the several distinct types. Sadly, that meant us learning Heather’s type was aggressive.

One of the best sources of information we found was ACPMP.org.  This organization is dedicated to funding and supporting research to find a cure for Appendix Cancer and related Peritoneal Surface Malignancies as well as funding programs to educate physicians and patients about these diseases. It started as a grassroots effort by patients and physicians to further knowledge of the disease, and today it is recognized as the authoritative source supporting advancements toward a cure. It is an organization for which we are very thankful.

Many have asked, so if you feel led to honor Heather by helping in the effort to find a cure, there is no better group for your donation. Follow this link to their donation page. Please remember to include Heather’s name by clicking on the optional “In Honor or In Memory of” Tribute section at the end.
