Journal entry by Sarah Nielsen

Dad has been home almost four weeks! Yay! He’s seen ortho twice in-person and his regular doctor via telehealth. He’s seeing physical therapy twice a week.

Yesterday he was released from all restrictions by the ortho doc! His healing has gone so well! We also found out that while the doctor didn’t do a “typical” ankle surgery - he did one that prevented further surgeries. By having plates placed in his foot we avoided a long waiting process to see if it would work (meaning non-weight-bearing on that foot six months or more) and avoiding a put-off surgery and just getting it all done. Dr. Kaspar was very pleased with his healing!

PT (physical therapy) is exited by this news and is already planning more work for daddy to do to help him become more and more independent. Currently he still needs the walker and boot sometimes. I have a feeling this will all soon be of the past! He’s strong and determined!

We are still battling his wounds on his left foot. One is close to resolving and that leaves us one more. Wound care nurses have been amazing in treatment and training and we couldn’t ask for better care! We are sure this will all resolve soon too.

Thank you everyone for all your love and prayers! We’ve needed them and will continue moving forward.
