Newest Update

Journal entry by Megan Lamptey

It is official! Hannah has been given the all clear and is now cancer free! Her exit scans in mid-July showed NO cancerous cells or tumors! We are so happy words can never describe the relief we feel as a family. Hannah is legit the best human I know and I am so glad that this physically difficult part of her life is finished. Hannah will have to continue to deal with the emotional turmoil that any cancer diagnosis leaves even after the cancer is gone.

This summer Hannah and her siblings had the opportunity to participate in Horizon Day Camp in Baltimore, MD. Horizon day camp is under the Sunrise umbrella of camps. They specialize in providing safe, free, fun camps for pediatric caner patients and their siblings. It was a wonderful experience. Hannah met kids just like her. Miriam and Malakai met kids who got what they are going through as siblings of kids with cancer. Horizon day camp provided an atmosphere of normal within the abnormal reality of what these kids lives are because of cancer.

We have also joined a local group called The Cool Kids Campaign which is a support group for pediatric cancer patients and their families. They have caregiver support groups (which Grandma and I enjoy), they just had a Christmas in July party with a foam pit! (We now will be needing a foam pit at every party we throw.) Since these two programs are local Hannah and the kids have been able to hang out with kids they've met at camp at the Cool Kids events! The community that we've been able to tap into has been amazing during this difficult and confusing time.

We are looking forward to this next year and the years to come. Hannah will start 8th grade and turn 14 this September. She is planning to be homeschooled for one more year and then enroll in the public school system for high school. Miriam is headed to 2nd grade and Malakai is headed to kindergarten at Pasadena Elementary. I am heading back to school myself to get my bachelors in psychology and social work at UMBC.

Cancer is the worst. We are one of the lucky families that only had to endure less than a year total from initial cancer diagnosis to our cancer free diagnosis. We are grateful for our health and the local health care system every day. We are grateful for all of our friends and family who've helped us navigate this terrible storm. But the rain has stopped, the clouds have passed and we are excited to keep moving forward.
