Journal entry by Haley Gallagher

Hi everyone! If you haven't been following me or would like a reminder of what's going on, here is my story so far.

At the beginning of August 2019, I was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, located in my C1 at the top of my spine ( the base of the back of your head). I had a few MRI's and CT scans and a biopsy to confirm that it was Ewing's. I like to tell people that my tumor is about the size of a chicken nugget. I started my chemo plan (14 rounds total) on August 23rd, 2019. Yesterday, October 17, I started my fourth round of chemo. Unfortunately, none of my chemo rounds have started on their scheduled days because I've ended up with an infection after each round. So far I've had to bouts of cellulitis/folliculitis, two hemorrhoids, and a uti. Along with each infection I've had a higher fever (as high as 103) which means I was neutropenic, an extremely low amount of white blood cells. I have also had 3 blood transfusions in the last few weeks, which are super weird to me! So far after each chemo round, I have been extremely tired and very nauseous.

Now an update on some fun stuff I've gotten to do here in the children's hospital!

Last week I was invited to the wave party on the top floor of the hospital for the Iowa Hawkeye football game. It was lots and fun and cool to see all the people with their lights waving at us. This weekend I get to go to the wave party again (tomorrow), the game is in the morning so I'll be able to see the people this time. My mom is going to the party with me and my dad will actually be at the game, so we'll get to wave to each other! The day before the football game, Carson King came to the hospital to present the check to everyone. I also got to go to that as well!

Today, October 18th, the children's hospital cancer floor had a visitor! B.J. Armstrong came to visit and he stopped by my room. We talked for a little bit and there were a couple people taking photos so look out for those on the children's hospital facebook page. I also took a photo with him and he gave me an autograph. It was a nice way to start my 5 day stay this time. Day 2 is almost over, looking at being discharged on Tuesday this round.
