Greg’s Story

Site created on December 25, 2021

We're Scots. We fight goddammit.

The week of December 19, 2021 Greg Smith - lovingly known to many as Smitty, Poppa, Señor Pepé, or just Greg - was diagnosed with grade 4 glioblastoma brain cancer. Glioblastomas are a fast growing tumor. We suspect that the tumor had been growing for about two months. His partner had noticed differences in his behavior, memory, and cognition, so  Greg went in for an MRI. The scans revealed a 4 cm tumor in his frontal lobe with smaller tumors branching out in to other areas of his brain.

Welcome to Smitty's CaringBridge website. We are using Smitty's CaringBridge website to keep family and friends updated in one place about his battle with brain cancer. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Claire Smith

Thank you for your support of us during this journey and to those who were able to attend the funeral in June. We had a really beautiful service for our dad where we each felt we honored him and shared who he was to each of us. It was special to see people together who mean so much to him and who he cared deeply for until the end. For those who were unable to attend or watch the livestream, we do have a link to the recording of it if you would like to see it. With our dad being the photographer of the family, we realized we have very few photos of the day. If you have any you feel inclined to share, please feel free to pass them along to us.

On July 14th, we laid our dad to rest at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in a private ceremony. We had his dear friend and Army chaplain, Glen Bloomstrom, lead the service. Our dad would have loved it. He was proud to have served in the Navy during his time at the Naval Academy.

We continue you ask for your prayers as we mourn our dad and begin moving through life without his physical presence.

Warmly,
Claire
