Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting

Hi Family and friends,
On Dec. 9th 2020, our world changed when Greg was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. A colonoscopy revealed a 10 cm mass in his rectum. Subsequently he had a CT scan and an MRI to help determine the extent of the cancer. We are going through Karmanos Cancer Institute for his treatment.  The size of the tumor was causing him some pain and discomfort so the first part of his treatment was to undergo radiation to shrink the tumor. He had 5 radiation treatments with the first one on Christmas Day. His last one was on New Years Eve day. On January 20th he started chemotherapy which will last about 4 months. His oncologist at Karmanos is Dr Philip. The preliminary MRI results look very good and seem to indicate that the cancer is just local to the rectum and hasn’t spread to the lymph nodes or any other distant sites. Although lymph node involvement is questionable, to us that means they are “not involved.” However, after evaluation of his MRI at Karmanos, they think the scan is inconclusive regarding lymph node involvement so he’s been diagnosed as Stage 3.
We had a very positive consultation with Greg’s radiation oncologist who told us they are following a “curative” treatment plan. Their plans are to cure Greg’s cancer!! After chemotherapy, Greg will need surgery, likely resulting in the need for permanent stoma due to the location of the cancer. Of course they will need to evaluate the surgery plan after his chemo to determine how the cancer reacts to it and to determine when and exactly what extent the surgery will need to be.
Greg has a long road ahead and we know with love and prayers from our family and friends, he will absolutely beat this!
We will continue to post updates here at this site to keep you all informed as we learn more about his treatment and condition. Thanks for all the love and support you have all shown us so far. It means so very much to both of us!
Love,
Colleen and Greg

Newest Update

Journal entry by Greg Overall

Hello everyone!
Greg here, It’s been a while since our last post.
Since not all of you are in everyday contact I thought I’d be good to post an update.
With that being said, I/we’re happy to report that all is going great.
It was May 18th, 2021 when we got the surprise results from a scope that the cancer was gone.
Since then I’ve had three other follow up scopes, scans and MRI’s. All with Biopsies and all with no signs of the ”C” word. I feel great and have no symptoms of cancer.
I’m going on one year and three months in remission.
My oncologist told us that if I can go two years clean, it’d be very unlikely that cancer would return.
So big picture I guess I’m not out of the woods yet. But since they’re monitoring me so closely we’d be catching it at an extremely early stage if it tries to bare its ugly head again.
On that note, I’ve been fortunate to be involved with a newer early detection blood test called “Guardant Reveal.” It’s new technology that looks for cancer DNA in your blood and can detect it on a microscopic level. This is important for patients like me that are in remission, but still have a possibility of cancer returning. Guardant would be able to catch it before any scans ever could.
With this new technology and being closely monitored by Karmanos and of course all your support and prayers, I feel real good moving forward in my life.
My next scheduled scans aren’t until the end of September so I’ll most likely check back in and post those results.
Until then, enjoy the rest of summer everyone, be safe, be healthy and Pickle on!

Love to all!
Greg and Colleen
