Greg’s Story

Site created on March 2, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website.

On Friday January 17, 2020  Greg had routine arthroscopic surgery to reattach two torn hamstring tendons. It quickly became apparent that something was very wrong. He was back in surgery Monday the 20th and it was discovered the surgeon accidentally sevseredand then put two stitches through his sciatic nerve- which has caused him to be paralyzed in his hamstrings and below his knee. Greg was in a body brace for 3 weeks and he and the boys spent that time putting in long days researching all options for treatment.

Thanks to the unwavering support from our family and friends Greg’s embarking on a cross country trek in hopes of regaining partial  use of his leg. A world where Greg can’t run, bike, swim isn’t something we are going to take lying down!😉

You’ll find all the updates here on our adventure.

4 surgeries in 3 different states......
This week marks 6 months since Greg’s Doctor came to me crying that he had accidentally paralyzed Greg.  These past 6 months have been filled with research, surgeries and hospital stays, crutches & physical therapy.  Greg has conquered every challenge in obtaining the best possible outcome post sciatic nerve sever.

Unfortunately his last surgery, the nerve transfer, has considerably increased the nerve pain he feels in his foot. Hopefully this will improve over time. Each of the last two surgeries take about 12 months to find out whether they worked or not, so the waiting is going to be a bit difficult. Greg’s days are filled with 6 to 8 hours of “homework” - his physical therapy is super extensive-strength training, balance, nerve training, brain training, gate analysis.

In September we’ll travel to Gig Harbor WA where he’ll have a custom brace made that was originally designed for the military. It’ll allow him to walk on uneven surfaces and some people have even been able to run with it. He wants to make sure that when he’s with Carter, if he ever needed to run to get him he could. Once he gets the brace he will have 5 days of physical therapy there, where he’ll learn to use his core muscles to walk.

In reflecting on the past 6 months it is very clear that the support of our family and friends  is what has gotten us this far. Thank you so much! Hopefully one day soon I’ll be able to report back that nerves are firing !🙏❤️
