Where to begin with Gloria's story... Everyone knows Gloria. From those who saw her friendly face as she greeted so many visitors at Eckerd Drugs for over 20 years to the fun-loving and spunky grandmother that my children have loved their whole lives. She is the adventurous lady that packed up her life post-divorce to live life her way. In a small beach town in our home country of Chile, she built a beautiful home with a beautiful view. She made some beautiful friends, too, that would become her second family.
In 2012, however, the story about an unrelenting disease that lurked in the background of every smiling family photo began. Following a routine procedure at her doctor's office, Gloria was found to have Stage 4 colon cancer. The treatment was tough, but successful. The colon cancer never returned. Then came 2013 where during a follow-up visit at the oncologists office, another cancer was discovered. A totally unrelated cancer from the one that appeared the year before. In fact, the liposarcoma probably pre-dated the colon cancer that began this story. Again she was victorious in her fight against cancer. She remained cancer free until 2016 when for the third time, a brand new and rare cancer turned our lives upside down. This time the treatment options were few, and cholangiocarcinoma has proven a force to be reckoned with. Even with the odds stacked against her, Gloria has preferred to ignore the medical chatter and instead live her life to the fullest each day. With each disappointing test result, she's had a good cry, sat with with the reality for a moment, then carried on with her life. Although the news has been tough, her body and spirit has been incredibly resilient. She has consistently amazed doctors as she continues to exceed expectations.
In July of 2019, the cancer made its presence impossible to ignore. A short stay in the hospital for complications due to cancer made it clear that living alone in Chile was becoming too risky and managing everything on her own was just too much. Gloria needed to be with her family in Texas who would take good care of her during this part of her journey. She moved in to our house in Dallas on August 21, 2019. She misses her friends in Chile, and I know they miss her, too. This journal is meant to keep our friends and family up-to-date with Gloria's progress in order to give you peace of mind and to keep Gloria focused on the positive aspects of her daily life. En julio de 2019, el cáncer hizo que su presencia fuera imposible de ignorar. Una corta estadía en el hospital por complicaciones debidas al cáncer dejó en claro que vivir sola en Chile se estaba volviendo demasiado arriesgado y manejar todo por su cuenta era demasiado. Gloria necesitaba estar con su familia en Texas, que la cuidaría bien durante esta parte de su viaje. Se mudó a nuestra casa en Dallas el 21 de agosto de 2019. Extraña a sus amigos en Chile, y sé que ellos también la extrañan. Este diario está destinado a mantener a nuestros amigos y familiares actualizados con el progreso de Gloria para brindarle tranquilidad y mantener a Gloria enfocada en los aspectos positivos de su vida diaria.
