On Oct 15, 2020, after 4 months of deteriorating health and no answers, we took our father to MUSC in Charleston.  Glenn has spent two full weeks here and today (Oct 30) was formally diagnosed with HLH (Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis). HLH is a rare and potentially fatal condition in which certain white blood cells build up in and damage organs, including the bone marrow, liver, and spleen, and destroy other blood cells - credit Google for the description). Please follow our story as we fight along side our father.

Journal entry by Jennifer Poag

Today my my Dad passed away at the age of 59. He was born in Charleston, SC and has now spent his last night 19 days here. He told me every-time we visited Charleston how he used to be afraid to cross the Cooper River bridge on the way to kindergarten. Today, I know he was not afraid.

We got to speak to my Dad before he was intubated and for that I’m forever grateful. Selfishly, one week ago I sobbed begging him not to leave me in this world alone. He told me “you’ll be ok. And I’ll see you on the other side”. Today, I had to let him go knowing that we both fought till the very end to get him better.

This moment in time I know will change my life forever. I am not at the place right now to talk to or see anyone but appreciate your thoughts and prayers. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to be a nurse again, caring for others, when I couldn’t even get him better.

My Dad was the loudest gentle giant. Full of wisdom and exaggerations. He worked multiple jobs to support us as a family and we never wanted for anything. He was so cautious and constantly telling me to be careful. Even at 33 years old he’d say “be careful on 85”. I called him at the car mechanic shop when I didn’t understand what I really needed done. He helped me move countless times to support me and what I wanted to do with my life.

I could not have asked for a better Dad. Goodbye Dad. I’ll see you on the other side.
