Glenn’s Story

Site created on August 14, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On August 11th, 2018, my step dad, Glenn Kobs, had started a fire with only him, his stepson, and my mom there--  it ended up to  flash back on him. He was immediately engulfed in flames. My stepbrother, who was outside at the time, heard the noise and rushed to Glenn and started rolling him around. He got Glenn inside and my mom called 911. He was air lifted from Osceola to Regions. For the first couple days he had a breathing tube, but once they had done the lung test on him, it is now out.

As of right now, about 80% of his body is bandaged, and 47% are 3rd degree burns. His hands and chest are the worst. He is now able to swallow water, so the doctors have him on a clear liquid diet. He is sitting up and talking to the family that has visited him. We ask for no visitors at the moment, immediate family only. We will make an update the second he is up to having other visitors. He has a release date sometime in October.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Dorinda Kobs

Often times, when an anniversary of a life event comes, we spend time reflecting on life's experiences... Glenn's anniversary of his accident, which left him fighting for survival and overcoming the odds, can be spent relishing life, with all of its joys and tribulations. Since Glenn's life altering event, his recovery has been filled with many ups and downs, and he continues on with the determination for healing.
I have had many people ask for updates on how Glenn has been doing since his discharge home around Thanksgiving last year and felt the need to make another journal entry for everyone that followed Glenn's CargingBridge site and offered care and encouragement... and with Glenn's permission, here is an update on how he is doing.
After Glenn was discharged from the Acute Rehab Unit at Regions in November 2018, he continued on with intensive, daily Physical and Occupational therapy -relying on family & friends for transportation to and from his appointments. He also continued to see doctors at the Burn Center at Regions for ongoing monitoring of his skin. As months went by, and with continued determination to regain his independence in healing, Glenn's PT and OT gradually decreased to once a week, which is what he currently receives. Glenn's recovery hit a plateau - despite his painful therapy treatments, Glenn's hand and elbows developed calcium buildup which has caused the joints to "solidify". This has greatly limited Glenn's ability to bend his arms and regain any range of motion for independence that he has worked tirelessly to achieve. Since outpatient therapy is not able to address the calcification of his joints, Glenn's doctors are recommending surgery -- this comes with risk of damaging the ulnar nerve that runs through the elbow and would impact Glenn's fine motor skills and strength in his hands. Our brother, Dale, created a modified eating utensil so Glenn can feed himself. Glenn has been creative to overcome other challenges that this has in his day-to-day life; his fiance', Shannon, parents, siblings and other supports in Glenn's life have been there to provide love and care for Glenn as he continues on in his healing journey. Glenn also says that his skin has healed as well as it can, and he no longer has to see the burn doctor for ongoing care.
I want to use this opportunity to thank everyone who supported Glenn, and his family and friends, during the emotional journey that we all started a year ago - may Glenn continue to embrace life and make gains as his healing journey continues.
