Journal entry by Karl Chorlton —
George, my father currently lives in an independent / assisted living home. 10 years ago he had obtained a reverse mortgage when the home he was living in at a 55+ golf community became too much for his limited income, he wanted to sell but because of the stipulations in the reverse mortgage he could not afford the buyback price so he lost the home to foreclosure. During the attempted sale process he was looking into independent/ assisted apartment nearby, during their sales process they assured him that he had enough money to afford this apartment and he trusted them at their word, now two years later they are demanding $60,000 which is the unpaid portion of the entrance fee originally $80,000 . Pop has very little left in the bank, which along with Social Security is what he pays the monthly fees with, about $280 a month this covers food utilities and monthly fees. Pop's 90 years old and has mobility issues, uses a rolling walker and a power chair and he has a pacemaker– the apartment that he lives in is of course designed for the elderly with mobility issues . if I had the space I would take him in, but he's fiercely independent. I feel a move into my home would not do well for him. If he can remain at this facility, it has what is it is called transitional living - meaning that if a health issue should present itself he would be able to go to the assisted living or nursing home side of this facility without any further cost or worries. if he cannot come up with the $60,000 then he will be evicted on December 31 2019.
This is not an easy thing to do but it literally is his last hope.
Thank you
God bless you
