Eulogy for George "The Mensch " part 3

College and beyond

George was accepted to Lehigh University and graduated in 4 years with a degree in Sociology.
Joined a fraternity and if I recall, was elected President.

Upon graduating in 1964, , he married his High School sweetheart, Arlene Guttag.
Was hired by Marriott to be Human Resources Director at the Saddle Brook Marriott
Perfect fit: "Human Resources " and her continued his journey as a lifetime people person.

Marriott promoted him to be the HR Director at the Essex House on Central Park south in NYC. At the time, that hotel was Marriott's signature hotel,
Typical George, he got us Comp Suites overlooking Central Park and we had so much fun in NYC with George, Arlene and Robert & Debbie , Dale and me.

George and Arlene bought a house in Fanwood NJ and if I recall right, both Alexa and Matt were born when they lived there .

George's Marriott career blossomed and he was promoted to the General manager of the Dayton Ohio Marriott . Several years later, he was GM of Marriott's busiest hotel in the World, at the St Louis .

Arlene and George 's two children went off to College, Alexa-Michigan State and Matt to University of Miami, Ohio. Alexa met Steyn her husband to be at college.

About 21 years ago, the entire family migrated to Portland Oregon. The entire family, East and West Coast members attended a memorable wedding in Sun River OR. Our Dad came along,

Three grandkids came along and George and Arlene became the proud, loving, affectionate grandparents with such a positive impact on the growth and development of all three.

On a number of occasions, they rented a beach House in LBI so we could all get together-memories that will never be forgotten.

Lastly, the closing song from the Broadway Show "Wicked" is "Because I knew You"

Please U-Tube it--

I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
But I know I am who I am today

BECAUSE I KNEW YOU-brother George

Eulogy for George "The Mensch " continued The New Milford Chapter

316 Lacey Drive New Milford, New Jersey

We moved from Freeport LI in 1954 to East Paterson, NJ now named Elwood Park and in 1956 our parents purchased a house in New Milford, NJ for $10,000. Little know fact, the down payment was borrowed from Alex and Catherine Glines. our God Parents and best friends of my parents
They had moved to the "county" from Brooklyn in 1955.

Some memories:
1. George was a very poor eater. Hated meat. My Mom would not let him leave the dinner table until he finished everything on his plate-usually 2 hours and counting. He finally figured out to get done in time. He would chew the meat and keep it in his cheeks like a squirrel. When he was excused from the table, he went up to the attic and tossed the chewed up meat. This trick went on for a very long time until our Mom called the exterminator thinking there were rats in the attics leaving their droppings (the meat)
The exterminator cleared up the clever ruse and out came the woodened spoon to whack George in the head. Not really, she laughed her butt off .

We now know why George became a vegetarian later in life (bacon excluded)

2. We set up a stickball field in our backyard which look very much like a miniature actual Little League field. We played every day-Robert, George and I along with neighborhood boys including Kenny Orr, "Kevin "Crash Corrigan (George gave him that name) the Zukowski brothers etc.

One day, I hit a line drive breaking the kitchen window. The first voice we hear is "no chippsies"
which meant only the person who broke the window would pay for it. In other words, the other players did not have to chip in. It was my brother George who yelled "no chippsies" for which I never stopped busting him for the next 60+ years.

3. George inherited my paper route when I was 17, he was 15. One Sunday am, it was raining and I was not wanting to jump out of bed and drive him to deliver the papers.
I convinced him to pull the 1952 Buick out of the garage-which turned out to be a bad idea when the garage was pulled all the way to Lacey Drive.

4. We also ,made money baby sitting. I have to tell this story because most of you know George had somewhat of a dirty mind. He was baby sitting for the Charkowski's across the street. and after the kids were asleep, located a projector and a reel of porno movies and started watching them. The Charkowski's came home early and discovered George feeling manly and watching the films -Yikes Not sure he received a tip .
The Charkowski's put their house on the market the next day.

5. George the Athlete, Arlene the cheerleader.

George and Arlene fell in love in High School. George played football and ran track and Arlene cheered for the team but really for George.
My Mom went to every game and track meet. Her proudest moment was when George came from 20 yards behind as the anchor on the 880 yard relay and won the County Championship.
He was "fast"!
Arlene became very much part of the Janis family and she became a sister to Joan and the three boys.

Our dog "lady", not aptly named in that when in heat all the male dogs came to 316 Lacey Drive-had sex with her and were lighting cigarettes' in our driveway (not my joke-George's)

George gave one of the puppies to Arlene

Most of you know all about George and Arlene -married 55 years after graduating Lehigh and Douglas respectively.

6. Another true and funny one. George and several "buddies" broke into New Milford High School at mid night and left with the answers to the final exams . They all were accepted to great colleges

so much more in the New Milford chapter-maybe some of his or Arlene's high school friends can add by commenting on my remarks

Bear with me-more to follow a little later
