George’s Story

Site created on September 25, 2019

We are using CaringBridge to keep family and friends updated as best we can.  We do not need or want donations, your support and words of encouragement are all we need.

George suffered a stroke early Wednesday morning, September 18th.  He was in the ICU for 3 days before graduating to the stroke center.  His right side is severely affected but he is able to communicate.  We will try to post regular updates.

Journal entry by Allyson Doby

After spending several weeks in a skilled nursing facility in Lynchburg, Dad returned home last week!

Dad successfully completed his first week of transitioning back into the world. He has been doing his homework and is improving so rapidly that soon people will think he had a minor stroke, not a major one! He consistently walks up and down steps independently, gets in and out of the truck by himself, started helping with cooking (once), and just started watching The Crown on Netflix. He isn’t just a stroke survivor - he’s a stroke warrior!

Mom and Dad have been working on establishing their new routines, which will include rehab at Virginia Baptist rehab centre three times per week and weekly massages with Jim McFarland Muscle Therapy. One visit to Jim last week made a huge difference to Dad’s mobility, so regular massages will be integral to the recovery of Dad’s right arm.

Once again, thank you all for your continued efforts, cards, gifts, meals, and support. We appreciate your generosity and your friendship.
