Journal entry by Cathy Gerjets

I have a few things to share  about Garry. Oct. 23rd Garry went to work for four hours. He was extremely nervous about going. I think he was  worried about his capabilities and looking dumb in front of the guys. I dropped him off at the job sight and told Jerry he was really nervous. Thirty minutes in Jerry text me and said Garry was doing great, like he never skipped a beat. He hasn't been back since? I don't know if he realized he wasn't quite ready? Maybe it was harder on him then he had thought? He did state that he was still nervous to return again. We have decided that we will not push him, it's only been a little over a year. It's truly remarkable how far he's come but he has a really physical job also. Maybe in the spring! On Oct. 30th we had the kids and celebrated Aurora's 10th birthday, she was so excited to be in double digits. As a kid I don't remember thinking about moving into double digits at 10 years of age? I had been noticing that there was some swelling on the left side of Garry's head around the temple area and could tell there was fluid of some kind pooling in that area. I remembered back to when he had his drains in CCU that at one point he had spinal fluid draining and I'm thinking that must be it. I told Garry I wanted it looked at and he just kept telling me it was nothing and it didn't hurt or bother him. So I finally just made the appointment and was able to convince him to have it looked at. We did that on Nov. 1st and she told us we needed to go see his trauma surgeon. So I went right home and called them. They wanted us down there Monday Nov. 4th Dr. Boarini took a look at it and said that it was probably spinal fluid but he wanted Garry to come back on the 18th for a CT scan to make sure that it is spinal fluid and that there is no infection. Garry has been more social lately, gone to a movie, out for supper with friends, bowling, ect. On Oct. 15th when Greg had his hip surgery Gma Cornelius, one of Garry's biggest cheerleaders, was just down the hall from Greg so we got to visit with her a couple of times. Then a week later she was taken to the Hospice House in Ames. It took a lot of talking to convince Garry to go with me there to see her. He was so glad he had. She had not seen him in almost a year when they visited him at the farm. Garry has come a long way since then and looks so good. When he walked in her face lit up the whole room!!! She didn't let go of his hand through the entire visit. Norma, God rest your soul, I know you are reading this from heaven and sending us well wishes and continue to pray for Garry's full recovery. We will dearly miss you, you were one of a kind. So today we went to Garry's place to get dress clothes for the service on Tues. and Garry for the first time since the accident was singing along with the radio!!! Garth Brooks and knew the song word for word!!! It makes me smile when I think about it 🥰. Until next time, Ninja Strong, MommaBear
