Melissa’s Story

Site created on January 27, 2018

Hi, my name is Melissa Rivera, I was diagnosed with breast cancer on January 26, 2018. This all started a year ago when I found a lump with what I thought was a cyst. I’m relatively healthy, workout 5 times a week and maintain a pretty good diet. I never thought in a million years it was cancer. Cancer doesn’t run in my family. I let so many unnecessary and minor things in life consume my time, I should’ve been focusing on my health. My whole life has been turned upside down, I just keep thinking how did this happen and why? I’ve done so much research and I know I can beat this but I’m hoping my story can help more woman be proactive or feel comfortable talking their journey to recovery. Every year woman are diagnosed with breast cancer, many , like me, find this diagnosis unexpected. I want to try to prevent woman from becoming another statistic. Technology is so advanced now that if caught early enough, breast cancer can be both treated and cured. This is my story and I hope you’ll listen. I thank you all for your prayers and positive thoughts. I know you’ll have questions so I’m sure this site will help us stay in touch. Love and positive vibes to all ❤️

Journal entry by Melissa Rivera

This month means so much to each of us in one way or another. This will be the first year of many where I change from “knowing someone” to being “one of the someones”. It takes a lot to post the picture to the left, this was the day after my double mastectomy. The picture on the right is today. There’s many more in between but I’m blessed to be standing where I am today. I can’t stress enough to woman, and men, to check and know your body. I wish I would’ve gone sooner, but since I can’t change time, I’m hoping I can help others with early detection and prevention.

With that said, I’ll be participating in the breast cancer walk October 20 at Amalie Arena. I’ve attached the link to my team (link in bio). While these donations don’t directly assist me, they will help fund the American Cancer Society in helping others with treatment, classes, support groups, research and much more! If you can’t donate, I’m hoping you’ll join my team and walk to remember those who’ve past, honor those who survived and help those currently fighting! ❤️ #breastcancerawarenessmonth #cancerawareness #pinkribbons #cancerwalk #livelife #loveeachother
