Journal entry by Mackenzie Mahan

The day our little guy was born. We were scheduled to be induced at 8pm that night, but he decided to come on his own earlier that day. We welcomed Everhett Ray Mahan into the world at 1:24pm. He was 6 pounds, 12 ounces, and 21 inches long. He was taken to the NICU at Methodist rather quickly and needed to be transported over to Riley as soon as possible. I didn't even get to see him on his way out. I can't say for sure what happened in the time after this, as I wasn't able to go see him until it had been 24 hours after he was born (Dad was able to be there with him), but he had a balloon atrial septostomy and got intubated. They did the balloon procedure to help keep a hole open in his heart that babies are born with and they close up very quickly. This hole was essential for him to help oxygenated blood get to the body, as the anatomy of his heart didn't allow that.
