Journal entry by Esten Langlie —
Timeline: Gene has had a sore developing for a while and it ended up getting infected and he developed a fever. He had surgery to clean the wound and is now healing and the fever appears to be gone. Recovery time is highly dependent on how the wound heals as its location makes it difficult to keep future infection away until the wound is fully healed.
- Saturday 12/28: Gene went to hospital in Grand Marais with a fever. They put him on antibiotics and then he drove in an ambulance down to Duluth.
- Sunday 12/29: More antibiotics, still had a fever. Blood cultures were taken to identify the infection type.
- Monday 12/30: MRI taken to look deeper at a sore. It was suspected that there could be an abscess underneath the sore that could be preventing healing. The MRI found evidence of this and surgery was scheduled for Tuesday. Still has a fever.
- Tuesday 12/31: Gene had surgery right away in the morning. They found the abscess and drained it. They cleaned out the wound/sore and removed all dead and infected tissue. Finally they packed the wound with gauze medicated with additional antibiotics.
- Wednesday 1/1: Fever is gone. Still tired and recovering from surgery.
- Thursday 1/2: No fever, recovering from surgery. Appetite is improving. The goal is for the wound to heal from the inside out, meaning they won't close up the wound with stitches but instead let the wound close itself.
