Erin’s Story

Site created on November 21, 2020

I have an aggressive desmoid tumor in my back now. It’s 11 centimeters at the widest margin. I want to use my back again, play my guitar again, carry my own gear, ride a bike, finish projects in my studio, and do so many things, without pain and fear of a tumor growing around my vital organs. I’m grateful to have access to healthcare. We all deserve it.

Journal entry by Erin Adkisson

My first Cryoablation procedure is happening this Friday, January 14th! I'll stay overnight, and be on bedrest for about a week. Thank you everyone for all the love and support. My mom will be caring for me at home. It’s going to be alright. I’m nervous and excited to feel the Desmoid tumor in my back become metamorphic. Frozen with argon gas for my body to “absorb it”. I like to imagine it becoming a icy blue butterfly, emerging from my throat in songs.
I’m very grateful to Obamacare, OHP, and my amazing Dr. Becker, who took me in when I had zero healthcare. To the oncologists at OHSU who listened and gave me this opportunity to heal. Healthcare is a human right.
