Emily’s Story

Site created on March 16, 2021

Emily Anne Langan was born 3/12/2021 at 3:29 pm.  She spent a day at the Prentice Hospital before being moved to Lurie Children's Hospital in downtown Chicago.

We found out during the 30 week ultrasound that her kidneys were enlarged, and there was little-to-no amniotic fluid in the womb. After consulting with doctors at Lurie's, they seem to think it's autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease. We'll hopefully know for sure in the coming weeks. This will most likely result in peritoneal dialysis until she can get a transplant around the two-year mark.

Journal entry by Jeff Langan

This is a post that I never thought I would have to write. On Wednesday, 12/7, Emily passed away due to complications from infections and surgery. She was 20 months old.

We went in on 11/15 for a splenorenal shunt procedure. She did good the initial day after, but then went down hill. The Friday after Thanksgiving, she went downhill quickly due to multiple infections and a twisted bowel. She was put on an ecmo (lung & heart support), in hopes to let her heal. Unfortunately, it was too much for her to come back from, and ultimately passed Wednesday.

Emily was a fighter from the beginning. She spent the first three months of her life in the NICU, having both kidneys removed at six weeks old. But you couldn't tell anything was wrong with her. She was a light in any room she was in, winning over anyone within seconds. Even before surgery, she spent 10 minutes playing peek-a-boo with the nurses on the other side of the glass. Every doctor/nurse had one common word to describe her: feisty. She had just learned "touchdown!" and would immediately say it the second she saw football on TV.

Attached is her obituary, along with memorial service information. She will be sorely missed.
