Hello and Happy Sunday to our dear family and friends! I'm back after too long of a hiatus (I'm sorry I'm not better at this; life moves fast) to give you an update and let y'all know about a big day coming up TOMORROW! Lets back up a little first. On August 26th Elise completed her 30th and final radiation treatment. The burns and skin irritation were pretty gnarly but Elise never complained and handled it with the tenacious grit that she has handled everything. On October 10th she had her post-radiation scans and we got the all clear again! NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE was the phrase used by her oncologist who was so excited for these results that he jumped up and hugged her as soon as she walked into his office. We truly have the best team. We are so incredibly thankful for these results and continue to move forward with hope and gratitude. Elise has remained healthy in all of this and has been given the green light by all parties to move on to the next step: Surgery. And it's a big one. And it's tomorrow. Elise met with her general surgeon and plastic surgeon to discuss the plan. Elise will be having the left-sided mastectomy and then bilateral reconstruction all at once. The kind of reconstruction they will be doing is called a DIEP Flap. This procedure is a Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap where they will take blood vessels, fat, and skin from the lower belly and use that to rebuild the breasts. It gives more longevity, is more natural than implants, and has become the method of choice for reconstruction in Breast Cancer survivors who meet the criteria for it. It will be a long day for all of us; we are being told to expect the procedure to last 10-12 hours. Elise will be in the hospital until Thursday or Friday of this week then will head home to recover. Please keep all of us in your prayers. Pray especially for Elise; mentally that she stays clear and positive, and physically for protection throughout the procedure and recovery. We hope and pray for no complications and that her pain is minimal or well-controlled. For her surgeons and medical team that their minds are focused and their hands are steady. And for us as we wait out this long day ahead and that we can stay vigilant in caring for her over the coming days and weeks. We humbly accept all of your prayers and promise we are sending them back for you and your loved ones! I promise to report back shortly after surgery.
