Newest Update

Journal entry by Katherine Bingaman

Elijah was back in the clinic last week to check his labs. His platelets were 33 on last Tuesday and fell to 24 by Thursday. Based on his trends we anticipated them being critically low, 10 or below by his appointment on Monday. While lying in bed one night last week an idea landed on my heart, I believe the Holy Spirit spoke to me. Out of the blue I felt led to google "artificial sweeteners and platelets". It turns out the sweetener in Elijah's powdered lemonade flavored drinks and his sugar-free Jell-O both contain aspartame. Aspartame has been known in rare occurrences to cause low platelets. Upon more investigating miralax has also been known in rare cases to cause low platelets. We immediately removed both, as Elijah was consuming both daily.
Elijah was back in the clinic this Monday and much to our pleasant surprise, not only did he not need a transfusion but his platelets had risen from 24 to 27!  Glory to God. This could be his bone marrow starting to recover, the promacta medication working or removing the aspartame. Not only is 14 days the longest Elijah has gone between platelet transfusions for months, it is the first time his platelets have risen without a transfusion since July!
We also noticed the whites of Elijah's eyes have seemed a bit less white. He saw his ophthalmologist who confirmed this and stated they thought he was anemic. However his lead doctor and his labs don't show this. Please pray that this is not a major issue and his eyes soon return to their normal color.
Elijah's MRI is February 4th. This will be to help determine if his last MRI showed tumor recurrence or just effects from treatment. Please join us in praying that God heals Elijah's brain and spinal cord, that the MRI will give Him glory and show healing and not cancer.
Please also pray his platelets continue to rise, that his immune system improves as it is falling a bit again, for improved balance and for strength for Mom and Dad. There are so many small struggles between updates, but also so many little joys. Thank you all so much for your continued support and prayers. We are in such a tough battle and each one of you play a part. Thank you for fighting with us for so long. --Marshall

"Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess." Hebrews 4:14
