Journal entry by Ashley Hawkins —
Friday September 3rd, little Elianna wasn’t feeling so well. She was lethargic and started feeding poorly. We took her to the ED to find she had a mass on her kidney. We were rushed to MassGen where they confirmed her kidney tumor was just smaller than a softball in size. They also discovered she had metastatic disease to her liver and one of her ribs.
She underwent a 5 1/2 hour surgery to remove her right kidney and adrenal gland to get the tumor. The tumor was successfully removed and little girl felt much better. The pathology on the tumor came back as Malignant Rhabdoid Tumor which is a rare and aggressive cancer. Only 25 cases are diagnosed a year. Elianna had a brain MRI to ensure there weren’t any tumors in her brain and they confirmed there weren’t.
We have been home since Friday the 10th amd Ellie is doing great in her surgical recovery. We follow up with the surgeon on September 23rd and hopefully start chemo the following week.
