Welcome to our CaringBridge site for our mom, Elaine Rybak. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of encouragement. Please feel free to share this site with anyone you feel would like to be kept updated.
On Sunday, 11/21/21, Elaine suffered a massive stroke. This occurred while talking on the phone with her brother Ron, so he was quick to contact family who could get emergency services to her home. She was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital where a blood clot was discovered in the left side of her brain. She was then transferred to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where they could perform a particular surgery to remove the clot. While the surgery was successful in removing the clot, Elaine has remained unresponsive to commands. For various reasons, a MRI could not be performed to determine the extent of the damage done to the brain. She was discovered to have atrial fibrillation which most likely caused a blood clot to travel to her brain. She remains unresponsive to commands (hand squeezing, eye following, etc) and does not have the ability to swallow or cough on her own. She has a feeding tube for medication and nourishment. She is currently in the Neuro/Stroke wing at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL, where she is being closely monitored.
