Newest Update

Journal entry by Heather Callahan

I have spoke to many who have expressed they were keeping up with Dustin’s progress through caring bridge. I apologize it has been awhile that I gave an update.  It hit me today that it will be 6 months since Dustin’s accident in just a few days. It feels like we have been on this journey a lot longer. I want to be real with how everything is going as I feel it is probably pretty normal than what we want to think. We have more bad days than good.... COVID hasn’t helped with family not being able to come around.  Dustin was making good progress in therapy but got real sick right after Christmas and ended up in the hospital for about 6 days. When he got out of the hospital his body still needed healing and so he missed therapy for three weeks total.  This caused Dustin to struggle mentally.  Some days I feel we take one step forward and two steps back.

We keep learning new things all the time. Dustin will get severe pain on his left rib and he states it feels like his rib popped out.  Me being the non-empathetic tell him to buck up and he hasn’t done anything to pop a rib.  WELL.... I was wrong.....We learned just this last week that his rib is most likely popping out because his ribs are connected to his vertebrae which his back is still figuring things out since the accident.  Normally to fix it, you go get adjusted by a chiropractor but he can’t. So he has to endure the pain until it pops back into place. He has had this happen 2-3 times since we have been home.

Some may not have Facebook but it maybe worth it to check out team Callahan as I can’t post videos on caring bridge. In the last four months even though it has been really hard Dustin is making progress. Dustin’ hip flexors are working. The left side is stronger than the right. He is able to get on all four and crawl. It takes ALOT of energy to do. He still can’t feel so it’s hard for him to see/feel the progress until  he watches the videos. Today he was fitted for braces and stood up and walked a few feet between parallel  bars. He is having to use a lot of upper body strength but he walked!! That was a goal and sometimes our definitions change of what it means to walk. The goal is to get him strong enough to use a walker and walk for 15 minutes. This is more for exercise to help with body maintenance. Right now he doesn’t have enough lower body function to do more than 15 minutes and needs more lower body function to go past this step in him walking stronger/longer.

The kiddos....  all I can say is we are lucky to have five kids who have been understanding and do whatever is needed for Dustin.

I know many continue to pray and we appreciate it and keep the prayers coming. Dustin needs prayers for the both mentally and physically at this time.  I added some photos of the family to enjoy:)
