Drewby’s Heart Story:

Drew was born with a vascular ring consisting of a right-sided aortic arch with mirror image branching and ligamentum ateriosum. Her aortic arch branches off to the right, instead of the left (as is normal), and then comes back around and loops around her trachea and esophagus creating one vascular ring. The other vascular ring is caused by the ligamentum arteriosum which is a remnant of a blood vessel that exists normally in the fetus; it runs between the aorta and the pulmonary artery, and in doing so completes the ring and also constricts the trachea and esophagus.

When we found out about this, we knew that Drew was going to have to have surgery between 9-12 months to fix her vascular rings, but that up until then she would be totally healthy and fine! Drew has been very healthy, but when we started introducing solids, Drew started to choke, which is one of the side effects of a constricted esophagus. The Dr ordered a CT a few months early because of the choking and it showed some concerning constriction, so they wanted to schedule surgery sooner. So here we are! Enjoy our journey.

Journal entry by Gabby Keller

Yesterday we had an appointment with Cardiology and met the doctor that will be on Drew’s team moving forward. Heart function looks great! (We knew that 😉) and there was lots of talk about “what it could be” but nothing can be decided until the procedure tomorrow and we can get a better look at everything in more detail.  After the appointment yesterday we went to the New England Aquarium! Drew had an absolute blast, and then we ended the night by eating on the wharf. Another great day with lots of laughter and memories!

Today Drew showed us how tough she is yet again. Today started out hard.. we started at ENT and had to do a scope while awake to look at her vocal cords. It was tough, but as usual Drew killed it. After a vascular ring repair, vocal cord injury occurs in 25-50% of patients. Drew does not have a vocal cord injury so that is great! The ENT that we met today will also be on Drew’s team moving forward. After that appointment we hustled over to meet the rest of the vascular ring and airway team. In total we met with Pulmonology, GI and General Surgery, Anesthesia and pre op. It was a long day of appointments and a lot of good chat and information, but nothing will be decided until after tomorrow. So tomorrow is going to be a big day for Drew. Anesthesia and procedures are not fun for her, but we are ready to rock it like usual so we can make a plan to get her healthy. Although we had a long day of appointments today, we made sure to get some sunshine at a park and have some pizzas. Lots of love and one on one time for this kiddo.

Prayers for our sweet Drew. This gets harder the older she gets and is able to understand and comprehend what’s going on. She has developed a lot of fear from her last year of testing and procedures and it has made for a lot of tears. But honestly this kid still continues to blow us away with her resiliency and ability to smile through all of it. We really were blessed with such a special little thing.  Thank you for all the continued love and support. I will do my best to update tomorrow when I am able. 🤟🏼❤️
