Journal entry by Doug Schumick

Doug Schumick, 64, of Fort Wayne, IN, avoided another embarrassing and futile Cincinnati Bengals NFL season when he passed away on July 28, 2020, after battling pancreatic cancer.  He was born in Columbus, OH to John and Katie Schumick on January 13, (Yeah, it was a Friday), 1956, the youngest and favorite of their six children.  Doug was a 1974 graduate of Canal Winchester High School where he was active, but not particularly talented, in sports.  While at CWHS, he did excel at pranks, skipping study hall and talking way too much.  He went on to graduate from THE Ohio State University, leaving that august institution with a long trail of parking violations.  Doug liked to point out the OSU lost two of its legends in 1978 - the year he graduated - himself and famed football coach Woody Hayes (One of these things is not like the other). Doug was finally forced to grow up when he entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1978, where he served 20 years as an artillery officer.  He and 500,000 of his closest friends deployed to Southwest Asia to take part in "The Mother of all Battles" (i.e. Operations Desert Shield and Storm).  Doug remained Semper Fidelis until the end to the Corps and the litany of peers, seniors and subordinates who mentored an average Marine allowing him to complete a rewarding career.  Doug enjoyed running - slowly, woodworking - poorly, walking George his ever faithful canine companion, caring for Ty the wonder horse and writing letters to the editor to the local fish wrap until he was banned by small-minded editors who failed to appreciate his finely honed sarcasm - particularly when it was directed at them.  Doug is survived by his wife Diana (Johnston) who he managed to wear down until she finally consented to marriage in 1996.  She was the rock he relied upon until his end.  They have one son, Daniel - always Danny to his dad - who thankfully got his mom's brains, his dad's sense of humor and who excelled at Indian University and first year law school.  Additionally, Doug is survived by his brothers Rick (Jessica) and Mark (Brenda); sisters Marilyn Bidner (John, deceased) and Anna Tumey (Darrell); brother-in-law Neal Johnston (Nancy); many beloved nieces and nephews; Marcia Johnston; his Team 48 Christ Renews His Parish brothers and all of the Cooks, Griffiths, Van Meters, Paris', Turchans and Rubrakes who always treated him like family.  Doug was preceded in death by his oldest sister Johnine; niece Erin Weiser; parents John and Katie; father-in-law Norman Johnston and brother-in-law John Bidner.  Doug claims to have shuffled off this mortal coil totally debt free.  Anyone who wants to challenge this fantastical assertion or offer condolences may do so during visiting hours at Divine Mercy Funeral Home, 3500 Lake Ave. Ft. Wayne, IN, between the hours of 5 - 8 pm on Friday, August 7, 2020.  Face coverings required.  A celebration of life and redemption mass will take place at 11 am on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, 1502 E. Wallen Rd. Ft. Wayne, IN. To sign the online guest book, go to www.divinemercyfuneralhome.org.
