Doug’s Story

Site created on September 28, 2018

On April 15, 2018 Doug was out walking behind the snowblower when he decided he did not feel well. He stated it hurt when he breathed in the cold air. We went to Urgent care at Dawley Farm. They did EKG and sent us directly to Avera McKennan Hospital Emergency Department. Doug was admitted and was told he was having an event. He had narrowing of  an artery of his heart. They prepped him to put stint in that artery. He was given blood thinner Plavix which we later found out did not work for Doug. He developed a large blood clot and now needed another stint placement. Doug spent 9 days in the ICU, 2 1/2 of them on a balloon pump. Damage was extensive.  EF was 20 to 25%.
Doug went home on medication regimine and started Cardiac rehab. After 36 visits he was still at the same place. Doug went back to his job with restrictions. He was sent to the University of Minnesota for evaluation. Doctors have told us he is a very sick man with a very sick heart. Recomendation is a heart transplant.

Journal entry by Paulette Olseth

Doug's trip at home was short lived. His blood pressures were low and he was light headed, dizzy and short of breath. He was very pale. We talked to the transplant team and they wanted him to be seen at Heart Hospital ER. They think he is having some internal bleeding and he is being admitted to Avera.
