Journal entry by Amy Nielsen Hart —
An update on dad. They took out his breathing tube successfully this morning! He is awake and talking, even telling his “dad jokes.” It’s hard for him to talk but he tries as best he can. It was just so amazing to see his eyes. I came in and he got a big smile on his face. He had a lot of visitors today and I could tell he liked that a lot. The nurses said how popular he is.
He is still in critical condition and everything is still up in the air. He has a lot going on. His gall bladder, heart and lungs are very damaged. BUT he’s awake! I can tell he’s obviously scared... we all are but he’s in good hands. He doesn’t remember anything. He didn’t know he had a heart attack. He was quite shocked to find out he did.
I took a different route to the hospital today. As I was at a red light, to my left, a pink balloon in the shape of a heart floated in front of me slowly. I got chills. I watched it float through the air gently twirling and dancing until it was gone. That heart balloon was a sign to me. A sign everything will be alright. I love you dad
