Hi Don and Family, thanks for keeping us in the loop on this good news. Let me know if we can be of help, I worked with Don at DHS in the early years. Two years ago my husband had his second stroke which left him unable to speak clearly or to find words. Though his mind still works quite well, this is on top of his being almost blind due to macular degeneration. He has problems with aphasia and with being able to pronounce the sounds and words (dysarrthria and apraxia) so he has been getting speech and other therapies off and on for two years now at Courage Kenny at Abbott. They are terrific and have helped him so much. He also went through an intensive aphasia program at North Memorial that is 4 hours a day for a month 5 days a week, that was outstanding. I too know the drill about many appointments each week and what it is like to live a "new normal". I encourage you to keep going for every therapy he can tolerate and that you can get insurance to cover! It is amazing how the brain can rewire to compensate. I am so happy to know that Don is improving so much, he is still relatively young which makes it likely he will continue to improve for a long time to come. Please feel free to call me if you want to compare care taking resources, and therapy notes, etc. 612-719-5845.
