Journal entry by Siyang Yang —
Lillian was diagnosed AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) in Sept 2020. She is currently in her 4th round of chemotherapy. Her brother, Jerry, was also diagnosed AML in 2012 and has had two bone marrow transplants. Jerry has suffered from many post-transplant complications such as kidney end-stage dialysis, retina detachments and repair and low vision, heart disease, and immune system compromised. Due to the rare genetic mutation, the best way to cure is to have a bone marrow transplant for Lillian, but she can't find matching donor in the US National marrow database. We are currently advocating marrow donor drive for Lillian and many other kids like her. In particular, Asian donors only contribute to less than 1% in the US marrow donor database. We are taking this chance to advocate the education and donor drives to encourage more people, especially minorities, to register at join.BeTheMatch.org/Lillian to be a marrow donor.
