Donnie’s Story

Site created on July 24, 2018

In the late afternoon of July 16, 2018, Donnie and his wife, Tammy, were sorting fat heifers for their Tuesday appointment at the processors. One of the heifers came at Donnie and threw him several feet into the air. He landed on his left shoulder, whipping his head against the alley pavement. He was knocked unconscious for several minutes.  With the help of the Thorntown/Sugar Creek Fire Department, Thorntown Police Department, Boone County Sheriff's Department, and Witham Emergency Ambulance, he was taken to St.Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Donnie spent 11 days in the ICU, 7 days at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana and is now at home working to return to his farm and community responsibilities.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Donnie Lawson

Donnie continues to improve physically and cognitively each day. With the improvement comes more frustration as he now understands how much he wants to get better so he can return to his normal life. Harvest, being watched as truckloads are driving past, has been especially difficult. We tend to lose sight of how fortunate we are. Living each day to the fullest and being patient is incredibly difficult when he wants to be back driving, working and contributing in a meaningful way. TBI is like being in a traffic jam.....slowly inching forward while you can invision your destination. He has a driving evaluatuion soon along with ear surgery in December. We will just keep inching forward. Be safe out there.
