Journal entry by Debbie Wenger —
Due to the severity of Dad's heart murmur, his doctors decided that he needed to have a procedure done to put a clip in his mitral valve. Due to the lymphoma and chemo, the decision was made to opt for something less invasive than open heart surgery at this time. This morning the surgeon went into his heart through a vein in his groin and repaired his mitral valve.
I just spoke with the surgeon who is very pleased with how the procedure went! He says that when they got in there, Dad's mitral valve regurgitation was "severe". They used their largest clip and attached the part that was flailing so severely, and by the time they were finishing up, the regurgitation was "mild". The aortic valve had been impacted by the backflow and was "turned inside out" when the procedure was starting, but by the end, it had normalized, as the surgeon hoped it would. Once Dad is out of recovery and in a hospital room, I will be able to see him.
