Newest Update

Journal entry by Kelli Woelfel

So it is December tomorrow.  This craziness started 3.5 months ago - but things are looking up a bit finally!  Since my last post, Mom ended up getting a secondary pneumonia and was re-hospitalized.  So to date she has completed one full chemo cycle (5 days intravenous , 28 days pills) and then a partial second cycle (5 days intravenous and 5 pills).  Since then she struggled to recover from the pneumonia and chemo.  Her bone marrow dropped as expected post chemo but didn't come back up leaving her for almost 3 weeks in a very difficult place.  Highly susceptible to infection, extremely tired and just not able to do much.  As anyone who knows my mom would expect, she has been fighting and believing everyday she will beat this.  Her white blood cell count has slowly improved and the components of it that are important today reached the normal range!  In addition, we received good news last week that there was no evidence of her acute Leukemia present. This is really encouraging news as they think she may have reverted back into her chronic leukemia state.  In the mean time, they will watch her blood (she will still require regular platelet infusions until her bone marrow completely recovers).  She will redo the bone marrow in a couple of weeks but until then she is feeling good!  She is back to being independent, driving and shopping (shocker!!  lol)   She remains tired and doesn't have the stamina that she desires but it takes time to recover from being idol for so long.  We had a nice small family thanksgiving and looking forward to Christmas!
