Richard’s Story

Site created on July 4, 2022

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

With Christmas cards going out, I thought I'd go back and put the initial journal entry here so that those of you who don't know Dick's story can read the beginning. Thank you for being here, and most of all for your prayers!

Background: [This was from June 23, 2022]
Dick had back pain for several months, was at physical therapy session on June 13. As he got up from the bench he had an episode of vertigo, slammed his left shoulder into the wall, fracturing his humerus near the shoulder. Subsequent x-rays and CT scans showed cancer in that bone.

This is what we shared with our Zionsville Fellowship church body at that time:

If it was going to be easy, we wouldn't need the Lord.
We covet your prayers, brothers and sisters, as we walk this journey together.

Dick told the oncologist that we praise God for allowing vertigo to let this bone cancer come to light. The physician thought for a minute, and said, “That’s a good way to look at it.”

Indeed, cancer is in the bones – shoulders, spine, and pelvis. Initial thoughts from the scans are that the root is lung cancer, but there is no mass showing there, just many small spots scattered throughout the lungs. We await scheduling of a biopsy to hopefully discern the origin and formulate treatment.

Saturday Dick has an MRI of his brain. He jokes that it’s to see if he has one. :)
No matter the outcome, our trust is in the Lord and not what we see with our eyes.

We ask you all to join in prayer with us:

v  For God to receive all honor and glory,

v  For Him to shine His light through us

v  For us to hold onto our joy in the Lord and for that to be evident to others

v  For His healing hand upon Dick’s body

So grateful for each one of you!

Blessings, cathy

Sometimes God says yes to our prayers,
sometimes no, and
sometimes - He changes things up and surprises us in some extremely unexpected ways!

With Dick's low-functioning heart, kidneys, lungs, cancer and trying to survive on half-does of chemo, it was thought he'd be in hospice by Christmas.

But God . . . in this particular case, for whatever His good reasons may be, we believe God laughed. 😆

In the past two months, Dick has:
   * gotten stronger and been less tired
   * had better color and higher blood pressures
   * had improved balance and stamina
   * been able to do more around our home, including dealing with repairmen (huge praise for cathy!)

We were able to take a trip away for a few days. In the next several months, we have plans to be with family at multiple events in various parts of the country visiting children, grandchildren and extended family. In the past this would have exacted such a huge toll on Dick's body that he could not have handled it all; now he is looking forward to these times!

To all those of you who continually are praying, Thank You! You encourage us and lift us up through your prayers. Our faithful Heavenly Father, for His good own purposes, is blessing us with increasing good health for Dick and we are overwhelmingly grateful. May He receive all honor and glory.
