Desirae’s Story

Site created on September 24, 2020

On Saturday, August 29th, the Lord saw fit to allow a significant trial to enter our parents' lives, as well as our own lives. Desirae suffered a seizure, and, upon further examination, it was revealed that she had developed a golf ball-sized tumor in her brain. A surgery was quickly scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 1st. By God's grace in guiding skilled hands, her surgery was successful, and the tumor was removed. However, biopsy results showed the cancer to be a high-grade, fast-growing cancer which will require further treatment. We are so thankful to the Lord for preserving our mom through her surgery and are confident in God's promise to work all things together for the good of His children. Both in this life, and especially in the next.

On Friday, September 4th, our mom was discharged from St. Joseph's hospital in Lewiston, ID. God answered many prayers with the gracious gift of successful surgery, great care, and awesome support from all involved, including all of you who were praying for her. We thank you all so much!

Before our mom was discharged, the doctor informed my parents that the brain tumor that was removed was a glioblastoma of the fast-growing variety. According to what we have seen and read about, the median life expectancy after diagnosis is about 15-17 months. Obviously this is very scary for all of us, but the most important thing is that our powerful and loving Physician is in charge of everything. We walk by faith, not by sight. God has already done many miracles in our mom's life and so now we pray for another one, trusting that God's good and gracious will for her will be done. Our mom's faith has been so strong throughout this time, trusting that Jesus will use this for her good and all of our good as well.

After many appointments and phone conversations it was determined that the first phase of our mother's treatment would take place in Lewiston, ID, just a few miles away from their home. The alternative was 4 hours of travel up to Spokane and back five days a week. What a blessing that Mom will be receiving care close to home! The doctors' plan for our mother's treatment begins with six weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatments that began on September 21st.  Mom appreciates all of the kind and uplifting cards that have been sent to her. Above all else, we are grateful for your prayers to our gracious Father in heaven.

Thanks again for all of the love, support, and especially prayers that you have for our Mom!

Journal entry by Tom Naumann

Dear Friends and Family of Desirae Naumann (nee Ohlmann),

An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all." Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Proverbs 31:10,28-30

It's been almost a year and a half since the LORD in His infinite wisdom and mercy took Desirae Naumann to Himself in heaven. Anyone who knew my mom knew that she loved children and she loved Jesus; undoubtedly, she was far more precious than jewels. Mom was a Christian Day School teacher by degree and bringing the good news of Jesus to children was her life’s passion. In her memory, and that others like her might be assisted in their educational expenses, we, the family of Desirae Naumann, have established a scholarship at her alma mater (Immanuel Lutheran College, Eau Claire, WI) in the same department from which she graduated in 1987. The details of the scholarship can be found here

As Desirae's extended family and friends, you are invited to contribute to this scholarship fund should the LORD so move you. Checks can be sent directly to the following address "ATTN: ILC Business Office, 501 Grover Rd., Eau Claire, WI 54701", payable to "Immanuel Lutheran College", and with a memo on the check or note with the check designating "Desirae Naumann Scholarship". These last 2 points are critical so that ILC can deposit the checks and also know the purpose.

All contributions will be placed into an endowment fund held by ILC. Whatever annual interest is earned from this fund will be put toward that year's scholarship award. Whatever isn't covered by the interest earned, we children of Desirae (Joe, Tom, Sam, Becca, Ben), have agreed to cover ourselves. If you have questions about this or any other aspect of the scholarship, feel free to ask.

Please do not think of this post as a solicitation for money. Please do not feel obligated to contribute. We are simply offering this opportunity to honor the passing of Desirae and give praise to God for her enduring legacy as a Christian teacher, mother, daughter, sister, and friend.  Feel free to share this post with anyone who you think might be interested.

I miss my mom every single day. I wish she was here. I wish my children could know their grandmother. But my thoughts are not God's thoughts and my ways are not His ways. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so are His ways higher than our ways and His thoughts higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). And He has promised to work all things together for the good of those who loved Him (Romans 8:28). And He has ensured that because of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, whoever believes in Him will never die (John 11:25). Therefore, I will trust in Him, rejoice in Him, praise Him, and look forward to the day when He will reunite all believers together for all eternity.

In the meantime, this scholarship will have to suffice to give continuing life to mom's great passion--that of teaching children about their Savior Jesus. May God grant it so.

In Jesus' strong name and on behalf of the family of Desirae Naumann,
Tom Naumann
