Surgery Day
The day before surgery I was given a time to arrive at the surgical center, 7 a.m. They could not give an exact surgery time. John went with me and then Debbie and my Mom came too.
Upon arrival the first thing that was provided to me was the cost of the surgery (after insurance) and I was asked if I would pay the whole amount. John and I had to chuckle and reply not today!
We waited downstairs for a little while, then were given instructions to go upstairs to a pre op room. The nurse was very friendly. Dr Conforti was there bright and early. It wasn't too long before I was taken to have a mammogram to insert a needle into my tumor to mark the exact location. The tumor had been marked with a clip during my biopsy to help identify it. The needle would stay in until surgery. I was also given a nuclear dye to help identify the tumor and lymph nodes.
I was brought back to the pre op room where John was waiting. The doctor's assistant came to see me before surgery. Also the anethesiaologist cane to see me before surgery. My Mom and sister also came back to see me before the surgery.
It was not too long before I was brought to the surgery room. My lumpectomy was an outpatient procedure which means I was allowed to go home in the afternoon. My tumor was removed along with 2 lymph nodes under my arm. I was of course groggy when I awoke. One of my other sisters, Janet, came to se me also. Janet and Debbie helped dress me before I went home. I was allowed to go home about 1:30 in the afternoon.
