Newest Update

Journal entry by tom calhoun

Hello All,

It’s been a while since we’ve updated so here goes…

The Ratch can’t fake it, the last few weeks have been emotional. The last round of chemo didn’t do what was attempted-to shrink lesions on Debi’s liver and as of today, we are walking a new road under the watchful eye of a Washington U oncology Brainiac who spent 1.5 hours with us yesterday during our first appointment. This Dr. Ward fella’s best line- “I’ve got a lotta tricks in my bag so let’s get to work”. It was a needed source of hope so to work we now go. There are a series of test, biopsies and visits over the next two weeks to determine a focused treatment plan so the Ratch can’t spell out what’s next.

Just know in Debi’s illness, her faith and spirits are resilient. Even after learning the chemo wasn’t working, she had a short pity party but within an hour it was back to the daily routine. A routine that included a lovely 5 day/4 night trip to Grandchildren Land (Valparaiso) where 5 of the best pills for her soul did the trick. Swim meets, basketball games, birthday parties and lots of TLC home cooking from Emily & Tom Jr. had both patient and nurse brimming with pride and bellies to match.

Thanksgiving was equally as good with Erin kindly arranging for an airplane ride for Mary so to join in the STL festivities. These two daughters along with son-in-law Doug were busy making sure the Ratch didn’t botch Thanksgiving dinner and according to Debi-we did good. Added visits from big bro John, Marianne, soon to be Major Brigid Calhoun, Jack+Patty+11 7/8 month old JP made for a special holiday. And there’s no substitute for two strong but tender daughters tending to their Mother’s every need.

OK friends, that’s the current status and it means much to Debi so many people care. Please keep doing your part with prayers, Debi feels the hand of her God guiding us all.
