David’s Story

Site created on May 11, 2021

David was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer in March 2021. He underwent a successful surgery to remove the mass along with one of his kidneys. After surgery, cancerous lesions were discovered in his pelvic area and on his femur. David is in the process of recovering from surgery and is undergoing immunotherapy treatment through City of Hope.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to start off by saying a deep and heartfelt thank you.  In spite of the unfortunate circumstances and outcome, I know we all did everything in our power to help David all that we possibly could, and make his time with us as enjoyable as possible. From the people constantly checking in on us, to bringing meals, helping us with our garden, helping us with walking Morrie, feeding Clementine or even the pep talk before going to battle insurance denials - all of that was instrumental in helping David as he trekked on this journey.  As Josh mentioned, David was able to do so much of what he wanted to do over the last year and 9 months - trips, events and scheduled hangouts with friends all happened as he had planned them, and he even got to thank his doctor in person on the Wednesday before he passed away. Little things, like getting to see the butterfly bush bloom in our front yard - he was able to have the chance to see that (just as he wanted) and he was so so so happy when that happened. So thank you again to everyone that thought of us, sent us virtual hugs from afar, and everything in between.

I wanted to share the details for David’s memorial in case word hadn’t got out. Please see details below:

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in David’s name to support research for rare kidney cancer sub types at the link below. Rare types of kidney cancer are unfortunately, severely underfunded and under researched. Due to the rare nature, there is no profit incentive for companies to dedicate time or resources to research it. If I can just make one person’s life better because of this research, and guarantee one less person suffers and goes through what we did, I would consider David’s legacy fulfilled.

Thanks again,
