David’s Story

Site created on September 27, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
On June 3rd of 2018, Dave was rushed to the hospital.  He spent almost two weeks in intensive care and was transferred to the step-down ICU room on Saturday night (June 16), in time to spend Father's Day with all of his family and grandchildren.  One day later, Dave was back home with us.  Over the next three months, Dave would be rushed to the hospital an additional four times.
During this time, we were advised that although Dave had liver and kidney disease, the doctors shared with us that his liver numbers were normal and his kidneys were doing well enough that he could live for decades.  On Monday, September 17th, the doctors advised that they were sending Dave home with Hospice Care.  Because Dave was unable to consume and retain any food or liquids, we were told to take him home where he would be comfortable and that we should expect him to be gone in two weeks.
Our family and friends have circled Dave with love and care during this surreal time.  He came home and immediately started eating (single bites a few times a day) and drinking 20-30 ounces.  He continues to be strong willed and trying to prove the doctors wrong, even while fighting this battle.  We are blessed to have had Dave alert and interacting with us.  We have a hospital bed in our living room so he can be among all the activity and it's not uncommon to have Dave correct someone in a conversation 8 feet away.  His dry sense of humor shines through and he still manages a smile when he sees his loved ones.

Journal entry by David Higson

We have weathered the "firsts" for the holidays without Dave.  I think we are all still wondering when he will walk back into the room or through the door.  Missing Dave can hit at any time as all of us are discovering.

For those of you who would like a glimpse of our service from October 28th, there is a short montage of the eulogies on YouTube if you click here.

We are wishing each of you a happy and healthy 2019 and continue to count you in our blessings for all of your support and love.
