Darrell’s Story

Site created on May 2, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On January 7th after a weekend of ice fishing, Darrell woke up with back/chest pain strong enough that we headed to the ER. Luckily no heart issues but the ER docs discovered that all his blood counts were extremely low. To make a long story short after a week in the hospital, tons of tests and multiple transfusions, he was diagnosed with high grade myelodysplastic syndrome with extra blasts and complex cytology. Which for folks like me, are asking "What the heck is that?" MDS is a leukemia-like blood cancer. Since diagnosis he has had 3 rounds of chemo and is currently in near remission. Unfortunately, his MDs do not believe this remission will last and the only real cure is a stem cell transplant. He has a great medical/transplant team here at UW Hospital Madison.
Travis was the donor and April 24th was transplant day. It could be several weeks before they can determine if the procedure was successful.
Obviously this is not the journey we expected when we retired but the goal is to be back in the RV by fall.

Again thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. I will post updates going forward.

Journal entry by Terri Erdman

Darrell James Erdman, age 59 yrs. of Middleton, WI, formerly of Chagrin Falls, OH, passed away on February 11, 2020 at Agrace Hospice surrounded by family and friends after a year-long battle with MDS/leukemia. Darrell was born on August 5, 1960 in Milwaukee, WI the first of four children to Charles (Chuck) and Marilyn (Kubczak) Erdman of Waverly, IA. He married Teresa (Terri) Beasley on May 18, 1985 at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Murphysboro, IL. Together they raised two beautiful, loving sons, Michael Travis of New York, NY and Christopher Jordan Erdman of Columbus, OH.

Darrell lived life to the fullest. He loved elk hunting in Colorado with family and friends, and he was at home fishing on either Lake Michigan or Lake Erie. He was an avid sports fan and supporter of the Packers, Badgers and Cleveland Indians. On his final road trip, the Packers defeated the Seahawks in the playoffs. He also loved music, making an annual pilgrimage to Chicago (2009 – 2016) with his sons and Terri for Lollapalooza with 90,000 of his closest friends.

Darrell battled his disease bravely and was shy to tell others how sick he was. Ever optimistic, he only had “good" and "better" days, even in his final week. He was a kind, generous man, a loving and dedicated father and husband who will be missed by many.

In addition to his devoted wife and sons, Darrell is survived by his parents and a loving family: brother, Scott and, his wife, Karrie Erdman of Oconomowoc, WI,  sisters Sheryl Dooley of Shelbyville, MI and Shelly and, her husband, Michael Suttles of Boyce, LA; plus nephews Donald Dooley (Brittany), Cole Dooley, Jacob Erdman, Cody Suttles (Alexa), Tyler Suttles and daughter Paisley; a niece Jessica Lang (Steve), Carson Dooley (son of Michael) and doting aunts; Shirley Huegli, Alice Hofmaier, Jean Aucutt, and Geraldine Ubick plus many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his Grandparents, a nephew Michael, a niece Kayla and Aunt & Uncles.

Darrell will be cremated after a private goodbye at Gunderson Funeral Home, Mt. Horeb, WI. Friends and family are invited to A Celebration of Life on March 14th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at Lucky Chucky’s Beach Bar and Grill, 37238 Valley Road in Oconomowoc, WI.
