Darlene’s Story

Site created on April 4, 2018

Welcome to Darlene's  CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support, prayers and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
Hi.  this is DeeDee Reiner, I am the middle daughter of Don and Darlene that may not know.  Our family thought starting a Caring Bridge site will allow us one place to update friends and family.

About 6 weeks ago my mom noticed a lump  in her right breast.  She had a mammogram in  Minnesota prior to leaving for the winter to Arizona so this was alarming.  She immediately contacted her Dr. in AZ.

Thursday, March 15th a mammogram confirmed a lump that was concerning enough to the Dr that a needle biopsy was ordered.

Friday, March  23rd a needle biopsy was performed to see what this lump was all about.  (I think Im going to let my mom name this lump so we can refer to it as something else).  At this point of course NONE of us want to hear the word CANCER.  Mom is staying positive and her same bubbly self but also wanting to know.

Tuesday, March 27th.  Results.  The news we did NOT want to hear.  The lump is cancerous.  CANCER SUCKS!!.  During these updates I will not get too "medically" with the terminology but the official diagnosis is:  Invasive Lobular Carcinoma.  Stage 1 breast cancer.
My parents met with the medical staff including the surgeon.  They presented mom with options on what the medical staff felt were best options for my mom.  Together with this information and support of my dad and us girls my mom has made a decision to have a right breast mastectomy.  Our mom is comfortable with her medical team in AZ.  Together as a family we reassured her that she is in the right place to stay and have the surgery in AZ.  She will continue her recovery in AZ until they allow her to return to Minnesota sometime in May.

Newest Update

Journal entry by DeeDee Reiner

Happy Friday all.
Its been about 5 weeks since our last update.  Mom is doing great.  No bumps in the road.
Mom is completing her 4th week of radiation.  2.5 weeks left.
Radiation is Monday through Friday.  It takes about 10 minutes.  It actually takes longer to drive from Breezy Point to Brainerd then the actual radiation appointment.  Thank you to all the friends that have helped drive and given my dad a little break.  Thank you to all that have offered also.
As Fall is approaching Ive been looking back to when we heard the news last March.  Seems SO long ago but yet just like yesterday.  Mom has been a trooper through this entire journey.  So positive.  So strong.
She is getting a little peach fuzz growing on her head.
So whats next???  Good question.  After radiation is complete mom will go back to have blood tests and see her Oncologist and team.  That appointment will happen towards the end of October.  We will update more at that time.
As always, thank you for the prayers, cards, calls and positive thoughts.  Enjoy the beautiful fall colors.

-Always remember that your present situation is not your final destination.  The best is yet to come.
