Journal entry by Michaela Podoll

Dad has been in the hospital undergoing chemo treatments since Monday. He was feeling very good, other than being very tired, until last night. Last night the nausea kicked in, and it’s in full swing today as well. He spent a little time dry heaving this morning until the Zofran kicked in. He is still feeling pretty queezy, but the last bag of chemo is underway. Dr. Ferro has stopped by to check on him every day, and he continues to catch us eating some not-so healthy food options we find in Sioux Falls lol. On a serious note, dad questioned him about the chance of the cancer coming back once he is done with treatments. Dr. Ferro said that there is around a 20% chance it will come back in the next 2 years, but the chance decreases incredibly (to almost no chance)  after those 2 years. As far as his chance of developing other cancers, Dr. Ferro said the only concern would be skin cancer because the Cytarabine leaves him more apt to get sunburnt. We continue to get excellent news on dad, every day. The nurses have been AMAZING, every single one of them. If there’s one thing that’s for certain every time we come here, it’s that he is going to have the best care. Almost all of his previous nurses stop in just to say hi and shoot the crap with him, even though he is not their patient. He really has that effect on people. We got to meet the sweetest traveling nurse from Texas as well! Getting to hear about her story has been exciting, and she’s been such a great nurse to dad. Hopefully he will start feeling better soon, or that car ride home today might suck for him. He is super excited to be getting out of here today and back in the comfort of his own house. Dr. Ferro expects his numbers to recover way more slowly than before because the toxicity of the chemo drugs increasing each time he gets treatments, so he’ll have a long, slow couple weeks ahead with transfusions. We are still extremely grateful for everyone that has and is still praying for our family, the prayers have clearly been working! Thank you all so much for following along with this journey, it amazes me all the support and kind words we have received. ❤️
