Danika’s Story

Site created on November 4, 2019

Danika was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone/soft tissue cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma on October 2nd, 2019. Her fight is being documented here, so all of our loved ones can have a place for updates. Thank you all for your love and support. We couldn’t do this without you.  💛🎗💛🎗💛🎗

Newest Update

Journal entry by Aprylle Messinger

Goodness, it's been awhile since I updated! Danika had her quarterly CT scan at UC Davis Medial Center on Monday and yesterday she had her follow up appointment at the pediatric clicnic with her oncologist Dr. Marcio Malogolowkin and her orthopedic surgeon Dr. Steven Thorpe. They said her scans were all clear and she is still NED!

Since she went back to school and is walking 2.5 miles a day, she has been having some pain in both her feet, but primarily in her right foot where the tumor was.  We discussed that with Dr. Thorpe and he prescribed some custom orthotics to put in her shoes to help ease the discomfort when she walks. Eventually in the future, she will need surgery on both of her feet to lengthen her Achilles tendons. She was previously diagnosed in 2020 with CMT, or Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. The doctors noticed that she had high arches, curled toes, she has an abnormally formed big toe, and short Achilles tendons. The surgery to lengthen the tendons should give her a better quality of life and less pain as she gets older.

But by far, the coolest thing about the whole appointment was that Dr. Sylvia Bowditch, who was one of the doctors doing rounds on the pediatric floor at UC Davis Med Center, gave us the good news that Danika's case was published in a medical journal!!!

I purchased the rights to the pdf copy, unlimited visits to the page, and also a full access link to share so that anyone who wants to read her medical story is able. The link will be at the bottom of this post.

I want to thank everyone who has sent us prayers, good vibes, gift cards, meals, and donations to the gofundme account. We would have been in very dire straits without everyone loving on us so greatly. I get asked all the time if we need help, and while we are doing okay and all our bills get paid, her medical bills are still pretty high. We are chipping away at them as much as we can, but if anyone feels led to donate to us, the gofundme is still active. Or you can always contact me about donating in a different way if you don't like gofundme.

We are so blessed and so relieved and so excited to see everything Danika experiences. Being on the other side of treatment and healing has given our whole family a new outlook on life. Thank you so much for sharing in that.
