Dana’s Story

Site created on February 15, 2018

Dear Friends,

We invite you to this website to join us in support, encouragement and hope as Dana begins treatment for lung cancer.  We will do our best to keep you updated here so that you can join us in our battle cry however you see fit... send your thoughts and prayers, your love and light, words of inspiration, or share a fond memory.

Dana has been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer.  The prognosis is dark, but we hold on to the hope that treatment will grant us more time, health, and many more memories.  We, as a family, have decided on the treatment path of radiation and chemotherapy, alongside CBD and essential oils.

We ask that, while we take the time to let things sink in, this be the main platform in which you contact Dana.  She would like to take her time processing this and wants to avoid having to repeat her story and spend her emotion over the phone, or through social media posts/messages or emails.

Thank you for your friendship, whether it has been months, years, or a lifetime of endearment; we need it now more than ever!

Heather

Dear Friends,

Below you will find the information for the Dana Carvalho Memorial Fund, established by Claire Flynn from For Kids' Sake, Mom's close friend, colleague and mentor.  We are so touched by this sentiment, and know that it would have meant so much to Mom.  If you feel so led, please give.

The Dana Carvalho Memorial Scholarship

Our dear friend and colleague Dana West Carvalho passed away in October, 2018 from cancer. Dana worked with me at For Kids’ Sake as a parent educator for 3 years. Her kindness and dedication to parents was remarkable during this time.

Dana is remembered as a long - term advocate of young children and families in Austin. She served as director of many early childhood programs, including First English CDC, Child’s Day CDC, St. Michael’s preschool, and First Presbyterian preschool. She also served as interim head of The Girl’s School of Austin. Schools and teachers and families flourished under Dana’s guidance, and dedication. Schools under her direction accomplished accreditation successfully, and she was a strong advocate for developmentally appropriate practice.

As I was visiting schools in the late fall, I was touched with so many ECE teachers were saddened by her passing. To acknowledge her contributions to the field of early childhood, I believe that a scholarship in her honor will soften our loss.

The scholarship will be offered under the guidance of the Austin Chapter of the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children (Formerly, the Austin Association for the Education of Young Children). For those who have donated, thank you. Donations are appreciated, and can be sent to:

Texas Association for the Education of Young Children (TXAEYC)
Austin Chapter - The Dana Carvalho Memorial Scholarship
P.O. Box 4997
Austin, TX 78765

The scholarship will fund teachers and directors of early childhood programs to attend the annual Austin Chapter of TXAEYC conference. The conference will be held this year on April 6th at the Thompson Conference at the University of Texas.

Please help us honor Dana’s legacy and support early childhood professionals in professional development for years to come.
