Journal entry by Deanna Hewett —
I had in mind that I would update this with each cancer treatment cycle, that changed due to bad weather then, we had to drain his lungs, this fluid was tested and cancer was found in the lining of -at least - the right lung. They put in a drain so this could be done at home, we had taken him to the clinic to be drained where they usually got between 1 liter and 2.5 liters of fluid. At home we got 1.75 liters then it went down to about 1/3 of a liter the last 2 times ( we are thinking this is a good result).
They have now changed his cancer treatment to target this new development. The mass they first found ( which was about the size of a football ) is now "immeasureable"!!! That is REALLY good news as is the fact that the LVAD is doing exactly what it is supposed to do! We know (they told us) that if they had known he had cancer before the LVAD, there would be no LVAD and Dacey had only a few days to a few weeks to live without this machine.
This cancer is very aggressive and they have attacked it hard and fast and their approach is working - if not for the LVAD, this would not be possible.
At Kansas University Medical Center, they are very vigiliant in their work which is why they quickly found this new development.
Dacey is now in the hospital because he became so weak (as he has before), Dr. Gupta is confident we will get to the bottom of this ....again. After giving him a unit of blood and some fluid, Dacey was already feeling better. We expect good results again.
I will update soon!
Thank you all again for all of your support and prayers!!!
