Journal entry by Curtis Kaiser

It’s been a little over one month since our hero donor gave our family the gift of life through our kidney transplant at UCLA. The recovery since then has been more of a windy road than the straight shot I was anticipating, but things are heading in the right direction. I’ve been very happy with the care I’m getting from my team at UCLA – they’re so good that I haven’t even minded the 2-3x/week 4:45 a.m. drives up to Westwood!
The support we have received from family and friends has been incredibly special and uplifting. We’ve never felt alone through this process. We’ve had wonderful visitors, friends who have brought meals and taken our kids off our hands, send thoughtful emails and cards, and just generally made us feel loved and supported. Thank you!
Our hero donor had a challenging two weeks after surgery but is now doing great and is back to work and her normal active self. She continues to want to stay low-key about her amazing gift.
I’ve been gradually increasing my activity level as the recovery continues and am starting to feel like myself. I’m continuing to enjoy my shrinking window of time with my new video game system, but am getting close to wishing the system a fond farewell as I transition back to normal life.
Thank you for your support and concern!
